“Oh I don’t know if I can do that. It sounds too hard.”
That’s what she told me. I blinked, stared, and said:
“Well, good luck with your goals.”
And that was all.
It was the reply I received after having asked if she included deadlifts and squats into her leg routine.
What do you mean it’s too hard? You mean it pushes you past your comfort zone, causes you to challenge yourself, get under some pressure, go through some pain, sweat a little, and breathe heavier?
Gotcha.
It’s like no one knows how to train anymore. People are getting lazier and lazier. It may only be a 10 minute walk to the park, but heaven forbid they get off their ass to do anything more than get in their car. Then they pay $80 a month for a gym membership with all the trimmings, and use it to do a couple sets of leg extensions with 30 lbs. for ten thousand repetitions.
Not only is it useless, it’s mind-numbingly pointless.
And that just makes me wonder how many of us are actually willing to put ourselves through what it actually takes to achieve our goal physiques and fitness levels. Are you really training as hard as you think you are? Or is there still secretly some fear in the back of your mind?
Yes, busting out another 2-3 reps when it feels like you’re going to die on whatever exercise you’re doing is BRUTAL and it’s hard as hell, and you will look like a furious constipated bullfrog, but it’s worth it. And I assure you, you’re not actually going to die. However, you might progress.
This woman I spoke with didn’t like squats or deadlifts because they’re “hard”. Of course they’re hard. No one said they wouldn’t be.
But in order to become better, you have to outdo your previous best. You have to push your body harder than what it can normally handle, otherwise there is no reason for it to improve. Your body isn’t going to build muscle if there isn’t a need to. And it won’t lose weight unless you’re causing your body to work hard and draw the energy from fat stores.
Nothing in life is going to be handed to you for free, I guarantee you that. It’s hard, and it takes time. A lot of time. Also, it takes a shitload of work that you have to be willing to put in. If it was easy, everyone would be fit, rich, and sought-after. That’s not reality though, so it’s up to you whether or not you progress. You are the master of your fate, after all.
So when something isn’t working for you, you can either change it or you can choose to do the same thing over and over again and get nowhere. Just don’t come to me or anyone else for that matter, complaining that you’re not getting anywhere and then making an ass out of yourself by inadvertently admitting that you don’t work hard enough and are the one and only cause for your lack of progress because of your unwillingness to challenge yourself.
Just train right for once. Stop being so worried about over-training, over-working, and over-straining your muscles. Get under a fucking bar and lift it until you can’t anymore and then waddle home, eat some food, have some sex, and get a good night’s sleep.
Your body can handle more than you think it can. The more you limit yourself the less you grow.
/rant.
Here’s a picture of a cupcake:

Love it, I used to be one of those people now. I love that waddle home have some sex and get some sleep thats a great way to recover lol:)
It certainly is!
LOL THE BULLFROG LINE, oh my GOD the bullfrog line. YES. That’s exactly it. I literally burst out laughing right out loud.
Seriously though — squats and deadlifts are too HARD? Well, how effing bad do you WANT whatever it is you’re at the gym to do? Obviously not very. People these days, dude. They want everything — career, advancement, great body, strength, great social life — handed to them on a platter, snap snap make it quick. I wonder how much of this has to do with our instant gratification society and the rise of the Internet — all information at your fingertips rightthisverymoment, ya know?
You don’t even want to see my training face. You really don’t.
Everyone wants things handed to them without work. The world will end up exactly how it was portrayed in “Wally”. Fat, and lazy…eating liquid food to avoid chewing.
I need to engrave this into my conscience. I never feel like giving up, and I push myself damn hard in the gym but I know that I can push myself harder.
Just push yourself as hard as you think you can go, and then a little further. You may surprise yourself
The gym, sadly, may be one of the few places left that requires work in order to be given the reward.
Hmmm..not too sure about that!
Put it this way .. those people makes us all look so much better, stronger and tougher
we need all kinds in this world
Classic exchange!! I love your response! You just know when an argument is not worth having.
At the end of this you hit on a growing trend – those who rationalize slack training as not wanting to “overtrain” when they are miles and hours and tons away from overtraining. That drives me nuts.
Bring on the hard stuff….I just met with my triathlon coach this week and after a very successful season he’s promised to bump up the intensity even more this year to help me raise the bar (heading to ITU Worlds next fall). I could hardly sleep that night getting so excited for the sweat and suffering to come. People don’t know what they are missing!!!
No point arguing with someone who is already convinced that they are right!
People always talk about the illusive “over training”. I still haven’t reached it. And I push myself pretty fucking hard in the gym. Everyone thinks the body is so fragile, when it really isn’t. Only time you should back off is if you’re getting injured.
Good luck with your training!
Oh, I hear you with this post! When I tell people I’m training to reach a goal in two years’ time, they almost die. What I want isn’t going to happen overnight. Anyone who expects it to is deluded. While technology will continue to improve and the fitness industry will continue to grow with more supplements, at the end of the day you’re not going to obtain a great physique without good old fashioned hard work!
I want that cupcake.
Precisely. It’s good to have short-term goals, but it’s also even better to think far into the future of where you want to be, and what you have to do to get there. The short-term goals happen along the way, but there is a much larger picture.
Yes. Your response is PERFECT. I could not agree more and change is one of the greatest aspects in life, we need to fucking EMBRACE it.
p.s. I enjoy your cupcakes.
Nobody likes change. But you just gotta learn to suck it up if you can’t embrace it.
P.S. That sounds dirty.
(no homo) (<3)
Amen. Squats, deads, pullups, chins, dips, more squats, more deads….the foundation of a solid program.
Don’t forget your overhead presses!
First comment for me, been following for a while.
I’m lucky that I haven’t had a client push back when I ask them to lift heavier or move faster. They do, however, dislike that my warm-up alone gets them sweaty.
That is excellent! It’s good when you can find clients who are self-motivated and willing to push themselves.
“Get under a fucking bar and lift it until you can’t anymore and then waddle home, eat some food, have some sex, and get a good night’s sleep.”
Priceless.
You and EPIC must’ve been on the same wavelength this week:

Heh I agree with Trev. That one’s going in my quotebook.
Interesting. Never heard of that blog but it looks like all kinds of awesome. Going to bookmark for later.

My response: “And that is why you must!”
Her statement is a classic example of the self defeating bubble people live in. I’m not sure who’s worse off…
The people that believe they can and still can’t figure out why they fall short.
or
The people that believe they can’t and therefore never try, never risk, and never succeed.
Too hard… pfffffttt. Show her this clip of a guy climbing Mt. Everest with posthetic legs. Then, tell her to stop being a woosie and start squating.
…ppfffft…squating is too hard… lolz
I have an “angry squat face” for a reason.
Great post as usual!
