Okay, so here’s a little tidbit from yesterday.
My friends and I thought it would be a funny idea to take a video of me doing squats with the same weight as the guy doing 1/8 squats in the rack next to me.
Purely for entertainment purposes, of course.
It was a fun time!
Take-home lesson: Squats are serious biznass.
Load up a bar. You know the drill.
You seem to have obtained access to a better power cage.
I was at my friend’s gym. Her training facility is phenomenal.
Fuck ya! You’re inspirational… and you kicked that dude’s ass. Love it.
Do you do other exercises to strengthen your back squat? I mean, besides the obvious back squat… Either it be mental or physical, but I just can’t get past my 1 rep max…
Oh definitely! Good-mornings, straight-leg deadlifts, hyperextensions, WEIGHTED ab work, regular deadlifts, box squats, box jumps, glute-ham raises, etc.
Basically, lots of ab strengthening and general PC work will do. Explosive movements. There’s so much you can do to strengthen it, but it really depends mainly on what your weaknesses are, and where your sticking points are.
Great answer. I do all of the above but not consistently… as in CrossFit we work on something different everyday (one major drawback to CrossFit). But my weakness is finding the power in my legs to pull me up from the hole. Time with weights will help, I guess.
Too good. Next time walk over and recommend to lower the weight & see how he reacts.
Haha, I REALLY wanted to go and tell him that he was going to hurt his knees if he didn’t fix his form, but thought he probably wouldn’t listen anyway. It doesn’t work when there’s a group of them.
How much weight was that? It looked like the guy was just rocking a couple of 45s on the bar, no?
We were both doing 135.
hahaha I love it!! I hate when people are more ‘weight concious’ then form concious.. you know, slinging around weights with only momentum or not doing full ROM just so they can look strong!
this is so GREAT!
Thank GAWD he had that nice foamy dealio to protect his fragile back and GLOVES to protect his hands.
Awesome clip.
I think it’s a little unfair to criticize him. Judging from what he was doing, one of several things could be happening.
1) He could be a beginner (and everybody knows what it was like stepping into a gym for the first time, seeing everyone else doing heavier weights, and yourself feeling out of place)
2) He has a lame trainer who has failed to correct his form
3) He is in rehab, starting slow to get back into complete squats.
It is exactly this sort of mockery that discourage people from even trying to improve themselves in a gym. I hope this is a lesson learned for everyone here.
Now, now – take it easy. I’m pretty sure none of them were in rehab, because they were all doing it the same way. As for the other two options…maybe. But I do stupid things sometimes, but that doesn’t really hold me back from bettering myself. We all start somewhere.
Anyway, I’m sorry if I’ve offended you, or anyone else – it wasn’t my intention.
I’m not offended, but it doesn’t help anyone correct their form when all others do is make fun of him and saying he squats like a girl. It’s just not very constructive, and if he ever saw this video and the comments, it would be very discouraging, where as I thought the fitness community was a bit more encouraging than this (it’s too easy to tell a girl with a hot body that she looks great and to keep up the good work, that’s not encouragement, that’s called a lame attempt at trying to pick up a girl). I know you would have felt out of place to give him pointers when there was a group of people there, so I don’t blame you for not helping him out.
But on that note, yes, your squats looked great.
That fellow is so wobbly too. It’s amazing how hard a squat is to do for most people; most don’t even have the flexibility for it. It’s scary sometimes! I really can’t believe how inflexible and weak some people are and how weak their mind-body connection is.
OMG, I love you. I was wincing over that dude’s bad form, waiting to hear him yell “Ow, my back!”
Great hip drive Cookiemonster!
Haha… total pwnage. I like how none of his buddies are correcting his form either. Gloves and a neck pad…? Really?
Hey hey hey Lucas, I use a neckpad or I get way too many blood vessels that burst!
Bruising I’ll make an exception for. You’re a thousand times more aware of your body than most people are.
This is badass!!! Ok, no…YOU, my friend, are badass, can you please come be my trainer…ass kicking is allowed!
Fuk ya! I love it!
Haha love it!!
So totally awesome!!!
And Anonymous…if he was squatting like a girl there wouldn’t have been a tampon on the bar, his form would have been correct, and even if he WAS in rehab/newbie his weight should have been less. Actually…if he was in rehab he had one helluva shitty physiotherapist if that’s how he was shown how to squat (wobbly knees).
These are probably the same guys that are there on Friday and Saturday nights doing the obligatory chest and arms before going out to the bar.
The fitness industry IS very welcoming. Although most athletes understand when a comment will not be welcomed (as it were in this case). If the guys in the video see this, maybe they’ll have the guts to ask for guidance when they start to wonder why they still have chicken legs.
@ Anonymous poster:
I never said HE squatted like a girl! I titled the post “Squat Like a Lady!” as in, you should be squatting the way I was in the video…I wasn’t calling him a girl, haha.
I think we just misunderstood each other a little.
Cookiemonster, I wasn’t referring to YOU making fun of him, but all the other who said things like “Thank GAWD he had that nice foamy dealio to protect his fragile back and GLOVES to protect his hands” and “you kicked that dude’s ass”. I don’t think he knew he was in a competition.
My mistake, you are correct, you did not say he squated like a girl, and I knew you meant he should squat like a lady (like yourself, full range of motion in good form).
Epic win
Oh lord – I just love the post – period. LIfe is short. Take a laugh for a laugh. And you go girl – for always being so real. You know I LOVE you.
Hi,
Love ur blog. I have a somewhat off-topic question, but how many calories do you consume on average per day. On rest days, on training days? Thanks
Haha, I see some guys at the gym doing similar things but I’m not sure if they’re in some position to make it feasible, as mentioned.
I’m only a beginner really myself, and I’m not so sure my squats are much better but I think your post actually helped me to be more aware of what I’m doing and how to improve it to as you say, ‘squat like a lady!’
thanks (:
You’ll get better with time! Keep working at it!
Hi – first time posting/commenting here. I dig your style. ATG! BTW, it looks to me like he might have 205lbs there, not that it matters … only makes it worse if anything.
@Dave:
Thanks for following!
It is 135. He just had one of the plates on backwards.
I probably should have loaded up 205 though! Haha.
I hope that guy sees this video.
He should feel horrible, and amend his sinful ways.
You called my training facility phenomenal.
That means you have to come back. I left the balls and bungy there for you. The sandbags you have to bring
I find it funny how the guys have to have all their buddies watch. they obviously aren’t spotting just standing around making him look “cooler” I guess. I also find it interesting how the guys never lift below parallel barely make it parallel in fact.
I have to admit I love sitting next to some guy doing his shoulder presses and I will use the weights 5 lbs up and show him up – I know cruel but its fun
